This event has been classed as the second largest free event in the UK and with big names such as Gina G, Charlotte Church and Noel Sullivan, Doctor Who and Queer as Folk writer Russell T Davies have all participated in order to make Cardiff one of the most prominent LGBTQ events throughout the country. Welcome back Cardiff Mardi Gras!
A bit of History....
2007's event saw the usual big name line-up with the main stage and cabaret tents presenting household names such as the Boy George Experience, Kitty Litter, the Sheila's Wheels girls, Pixie Perez and Nicki French. There where six awards presented for the great and good of Wales, one for every colour of the Rainbow flag. The categories were 'Most Positive Role Model', 'Best New Friend of Mardi Gras', 'Community Spirit', 'Scene Personality', 'The Safer Wales Award' and 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. Nominees for the awards included TV producer Russell T Davies and Torchwood star John Barrowman.
Because of the rapid expansion of the Cardiff Mardi Gras, from 5,000 people at the first event in 1999 to more than 40,000 people in attendance in 2007, the organisers are actively seeking donations that will help to keep the cost of participation down to a bare minimum. Due to this lack of public donations over the last few years, costing the event to meet demand has become increasingly difficult.
