Leicester Pride
4th September 2010
After the overwhelming success of last year’s events, Leicester Pride is set to return to the city on Saturday 4th September 2010. Building on the momentum from Leicester Pride 2009, this year will be much bigger and better thanks to growing support and recognition from Leicester City Council and the LGBT community.
A more direct route is in negotiation, taking the parade through the heart of the city to the festival site on Belgrave gate which is set to expand out into the surrounding streets as more market stalls and fairground attractions are added.
After consultation with members of the Leicester Pride Facebook groups, the committee are proud to announce that this year’s events will have a “fairy tale” theme throughout. The build up to the big day officially starts on Saturday June 5th 2010 with scene-wide “Alice in Wonderland” themed events taking place at each of the gay venues in the city.
Previous Prides
5th September 2009 saw Leicester Pride hold an annual LGBT Pride and usually involved a parade running through the City Centre followed by a festival on Victoria Park, and then events running into the evening in the Scene bars and clubs in Leicester.
There has not been a pride in Leicester recently, following the more cultural "Celebrate '08" a series of public meetings were held which led to the formation of Celebrate Gay Leicester, a not for profit company that aims to create environments where everybody can be themselves in a Safe Space. Area's that invite everyone to learn, engage and interact with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community in the hope that through this learning and shared experience, the stigmas and problems faced by the community will disappear.
